JOHANO THE SUN GOD

Myths of the Ocean – MS Victory

.

This legend is emblematic of a theme throughout the ancient world from India to China to the Southwest of North America. Always associated with the power and sacredness of the sun, seen to be necessary for all life, and always associated with horses.

.

Here the Navaho myth of the Sun God Johano was to have ridden across the sky, holding the sun in his hand to give light to the world. Changing horses throughout the daylight hours.

I imported other imagery of water, and coral and stone into the drawings of the horses, which makes it more mythological. It’s a beautiful image, and one that as a horse lover, I had no trouble in depicting!

.

Light emanates from behind the mural, particularly in the area of the sun which brings it to life.
