Myths of the Ocean – MS Victory

~

A mythological animal resembling a horse with a single horn on its forehead. The myth of the Unicorn is not unlike the crazy assumptions of today that suppose, without any medical verification, that the horn of the rhinoceros has medicinal qualities, anything from the effect of an aphrodisiac to the extension of life!

.

In ancient cultures, the unicorn appeared in early Mesopotamian artworks, and it also was referred to in the ancient myths of India and China. The myth of the Unicorn was taken very seriously, and may have been a real live animal that has since become extinct. The unicorn horn was thought to have magical powers. It may have derived from the rhinoceros horn which is poached to this day for similar reasons, and sold for many times their weight in gold. This has proved to be a very profitable industry. It could have also been mistaken for the narwhal horn, an aquatic creature, known as the Unicorn of the sea.

.

It’s nevertheless a beautiful symbol. I placed the Unicorn immersed in the surf, because having magical powers, there is no reason why the Unicorn should not swim in the ocean!
